TRANQUILITY

This academic project was driven by…

the intention to enhance a mundane elevator ride that lasts 60 seconds, without any context. Given only the size of the elevator as a constraint, I was able to design an experiential moment. Playing with the ideas of duration, ascension and descension I created an environment that would simulate what it feels like to reach the bottom of the ocean floor or vice versa. The proposal includes creating window cut outs through the elevator walls that allow one to see into the elevator shaft. In the elevator shaft is a fitted resin artwork shell that resembles the varying colors and textures of water.  Light effects are used at the top of the shaft to resemble brighter, natural light, alluding to the water’s surface. To really enhance the sensory experience and ocean associations, a subtle salt mist is infused inside the elevator.
